Confidentiality

NASW Code of Ethics

Every effort is made to assure your treatment proceeds in an ethical and professional manner as outlined by the Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Workers. I am happy to talk with you about what the NASW Code of Ethics means for you in therapy.

HIPPA and Limits to Confidentiality

Your privacy is a very important, serious matter. All licensed providers (primary care providers, doctors, nurses, social workers, counselors, psychologists, etc.) are required by federal law to follow the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines. While our work is confidential by law, the law also includes limits to your confidentiality:

  • if you are at risk of harm to yourself, for example, you report you are suicidal
  • if you are at risk of harm to others, for example, you report you are homicidal
  • if you report you have been abusive or neglectful of children, the elderly, or people with disabilities, for example, you have repeatedly driven drunk with children in the car

I am happy to answer any questions you have about HIPAA or limits to confidentiality in therapy.
