Finding Respect at Sutter’s Creek

Finding Respect at Sutter’s Creek is set in Sutter’s Creek County Jail in southern Alabama and follows Charlotte, a local clinical social worker, as she is brought in to help after a mental health crisis and a suicide attempt by inmates.

When the jail administration turns to Charlotte for assistance, she is tasked with developing a mental health assessment tool and protocols for corrections officers. Her goal is to help officers recognize when inmate behaviors may signal a mental health crisis rather than disciplinary issues.

Charlotte quickly learns that respect is the inmates’ “currency” — having it can help them complete their sentences without drawing attention, while lacking it can lead to harsher treatment, such as being “thrown a blanket party”.
Her interactions with Winston, an inmate transferred from another jail, challenge her assumptions. Through tense encounters, Winston teaches Charlotte that respect is not a title or rank, but something earned. This forces Charlotte to navigate the dangerous power dynamics between inmates and officers while trying to earn their trust.
